Marine botanical resources of Kenya coast OceanDocs
Ruwa, R.K..
Investigations have shown that Kenya coast botanical resources are underutilized and have not been realized as exploitable resources. Apart from the mangroves which are heavily exploited, algae and marine angiosperm resources are the least exploited. In a step to realize these as future exploitable resources their current uses in Kenya and how they could be used is discussed. A review of research work which could be seen as a prelude to further research is also included.

Marine Resource Management for Misali Island: Preliminary Analysis by Frontier-Tanzania OceanDocs
Daniels, C.; Fanning, E.; Redding, D..
Abstract—In collaboration with local stakeholders, Frontier-Tanzania is collecting biophysical information to facilitate effective management initiatives for Misali Island, where marine resource management is currently limited to a 1.4-km2 non-extraction zone within a 21.6-km2 conservation area. In the study reported here, the extraction and non-extraction zones at Misali Island with similar substrata were compared. Data analysis showed a significant disassociation in both abundance and mean length patterns of fish families found in each zone. Further analysis using t-tests on individual families showed that some groups were significantly more abundant in either zone, but without significant differences of mean lengths. Fish family abundance and length...

Engagement in the market changes the opportunities and strategies of forest-related peoples. Efforts to support rural development need to better understand the potential importance of markets and the way people respond to them. To this end, we compared 61 case studies of the commercial production and trade of nontimber forest products from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The results show that product use is shaped by local markets and institutions, resource abundance, and the relative level of development. Larger regional patterns are also important. High-value products tend to be managed intensively by specialized producers and yield substantially higher incomes than those generated by the less specialized producers of less managed, low-value products....

Participation in protected areas: a social network case study in Catalonia, Spain Ecology and Society
Local participation of stakeholders in governance of protected areas is considered to be important to natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. Social network analysis (SNA) is a useful tool for analysis because it allows the understanding of stakeholders’ relationships, interactions, and influences through communication networks. We combine quantitative and qualitative data to undertake a SNA for the natural park of Sant Llorenç del Munt in Catalonia, Spain. This is aimed at (1) assessing the structure of the communication network; (2) comparing the informal communication network with the formal participatory bodies of the natural park; and (3) selecting participants for subsequent analyses of the adequate governance...

PECES Y MACROINVERTEBRADOS MÓVILES DE HÁBITATS ARTIFICIALES EN LA BAHÍA DE TAGANGA, CARIBE COLOMBIANO Boletín de Investigaciones
Delgadillo-Garzón,Óscar.
Fishes and macroinvertebrates associated to two types of artificial habitats deployed in Taganga Bay were assessed by stationary visual census to compare these assemblages. Forty-one species of fishes and nine macroinvertebrates were observed in eleven visual censuses. The distribution patterns depicted in abundance and richness between the two types of habitats used (concrete blocks vs. artificial shelters), were a possible response to dissimilarities in their location and number of visual census. A relative high fish richness and diversity were found in these artificial habitats, in comparison to other artificial structures in Colombia, probably owing to their proximity with heterogeneous natural habitats. The use of complex artificial habitats could...

Portfolio Analysis for Optimal Seafood Product Diversification and Resource Management AgEcon
Sylvia, Gilbert; Tuininga, Chris; Larkin, Sherry L..
Future harvests from commercial fish stocks are unlikely to increase substantially due to biological and regulatory constraints. Developing alternative sets of processed seafood products is one strategy for increasing welfare while managing the risks inherent in a variable and renewable natural resource. To quantify the risk-benefit tradeoffs of alternative strategies, a portfolio decision framework is embedded into a multi-period bioeconomic model. The model is used to generate an efficient portfolio frontier to estimate possible rent dissipation from status quo management. Frontiers are also generated for seafood processors and brokers. Implications for the different industry agents are discussed.

Preliminary assessment of the cocial, economic and environmental impacts of Water Hyacinth in Lake Victoria basin and status of control OceanDocs
Mailu, A.M..
The paper presents preliminary data collected in an assessment of the social, economic and environmental impacts of water hyacinth in the Lake Victoria Basin. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The report draws on field observations made, studies through interviews of affected communities and organisations, personal communications and published reports by scientists in the region. Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater body, supports an estimated 25 million people living in the Basin, with an estimated gross economic product of US$3–4 billion annually, mainly from subsistence agriculture and fishing in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and parts of Rwanda and Burundi. The multiple activities in the Lake Victoria...

Public Attitudes to the Use of Wildlife by Aboriginal Australians: Marketing of Wildlife and its Conservation AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Swarna Nantha, Hemanath.
Attitudes of a sample of the Australian public towards the subsistence use of wildlife by indigenous Australians and whether or not indigenous Australians should be allowed to sell wildlife and wildlife products is examined. It has been suggested that allowing such possibilities would provide economic incentives for nature conservation among local people. We explore whether those sampled believe that indigenous Australians should do more than other groups and institutions to conserve Australia’s tropical species, and whether or not indigenous Australians should be allowed to take common as well as endangered wildlife species for food. Attitudes of the sampled public towards indigenous Australians earning income from trophy hunting and from the harvesting...
